…That was the title of a book I purchased recently off of Amazon. As many of you know, business has grown at times beyond my capacity to keep up. Hiring Keely back in February has helped a great deal, but things still become bumpy once and awhile what with 30 clients, a new mortgage, a teenager, a husband with a very fragile case of Type 1 diabetes and two wee ones to manage.
After awhile, one gets so much ’stuff’ floating around in their head that you can’t focus on the big picture any longer. That was what I was facing when I hit the ‘buy’ button at Amazon and ordered this book by David Allen. Thank heavens I did! I now have the tools I need - very simple tools - to get out from under and get all the ’stuff’ out of my head and into a manageable process. His philosophy is quite simple - when it’s in your head, your brain tells you 24/7 that you should be doing it NOW! You know you have something to do, but you haven’t taken the time to figure out what the direct ‘next action’ is - nor have you determined what you want the goal to be. So, he advocates taking everything out of your head and putting it on paper - even if it’s one line on one huge piece of paper and then you put it into your ‘in’ box. Then you sit down and go through all the pieces of paper and determine A. What is it? B. Is it actionable? If yes - What is the Next action? - If the next action takes less than 2 minutes - do it! If it may take more time, then defer it to a calendar or your next action pile. Or, you can delegate it and put it into a ‘waiting’ file so you don’t lose track of the item. If there is no ‘next action’ then you either trash it, incubate it into a someday/maybe or tickler file for weekly review - or you file it as reference material. That’s just a brief idea behind the wonderful tips in the book. If you’ve ever felt like pulling your hair out because you’re so stressed and overwhelmed, you might want to check it out. You can visit David Allen’s website at Getting Things Done. It sure saved me! Now, I have little excuse to not make a blog post here at least once a week.
